LIVING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Return to Top

It is often said that, "If you live in the Madawaska Valley, you enjoy a high quality of life". What does this mean? To you?  To your neighbour? To someone with a disability? Does it mean enjoying clean air and lots of outdoor activities? Does it mean knowing and being known by many friends and neighbours? Might it mean living in a  community whose residents care about one another and lending a hand when it's needed?

We are the Madawaska Valley Association for Community Living. The  name may have caused you some confusion in the past. We are a group of  many people who are committed to ensuring that everyone in the Madawaska Valley has the opportunity to share in our area's "high  quality of life". We focus on helping people who have been  labelled "developmentally handicapped" to deal with the challenges in their lives. We are employees and volunteers, and  individuals whom we assist in obtaining services for themselves and in providing services to the community

Persons who have a disability, either developmental, physical or emotional, sometimes need a little extra time to accomplish something  you may take for granted. This does not mean that they are not able to  enjoy what you enjoy. As with all of us, they are capable of many accomplishments, and, sometimes all they really need is your understanding.

AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY

The basis for M.V.A.C.L.'s activities is that our community will grow stronger through the active participation of all its members. We are helping to build an inclusive community by providing a range of supports and services. To the extend that we can, we try to "customize"  our support to the unique needs of the individuals and their family situation.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Friendships and involvement in community activities provide us all with support and opportunities to learn and share

The role of M.V.A.C.L. is to encourage the development of meaningful friendships by promoting interaction between individuals within our community who share similar interests.

MAKING A CONTRIBUTION

M.V.A.C.L's "DAY OPTIONS" assists adults in  developing competency in the activities of daily living. Based at 21  Opeongo Line East, "Day Options" includes woodworking,  literacy training and individualized life skills supports and  training.

The SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM helps people work right  here in our community. Support is provided to both the employee and the employer. For many people the goal is competitive wage paying  employment. For some, supported employment provides a means to build  skills, develop social relationships and learn about employment  options.

SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIVING

The Association owns four houses in Barry's Bay. With the assistance of the ministries of Housing and Community Social Services, rent-geared-to-income housing is provided for adults with  disabilities.

We provide individualized support to residents from the Association. In addition, we work with adults with disabilities to secure affordable accommodation.

CHILD AND FAMILY SUPPORT

Return to Top

Experience has proven that the best place for all children to grow up is at home with their families. We believe that all children should  have the opportunity for education with their peers at the school of their choice where they further their growth and development together.

M.V.A.C.L. assists families to plan for and secure needed supports and services. Emphasis is placed on assisting families to solve  problems and in supporting inclusion of children with disabilities in  all phases of community life.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND FUNDRAISING

Return to Top

Our Board of Directors is made up of ten people elected from our general membership who provide leadership and stewardship for the Association and its consumers. Our Board of Directors lends a strong hand in fundraising for special projects, as well as required  assistance outside the day-to-day operating budget. In good part, this  is achieved through the good auspices of one of our local merchants by the sale of Nevada tickets. Fundraising is supplemented by raffles,  yard sales and various other activities. The Association is the fortunate recipient of many generous donations from its membership and  the public.

OUR MISSION / GOAL STATEMENT

Return to Top

The Mission of the Madawaska Valley Association for Community Living is to advocate for and support the efforts of persons labelled  developmentally disabled in order that all persons live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the Madawaska Valley and have the opportunity to participate effectively.

Realization of this goal requires advocacy and support to ensure that all persons:

  • as children, are nurtured within a family and, as a consequence, enjoy the benefits of family life;
  • as children, have the opportunity for education with their peers at the school of their choice where they further their growth and  development together;
  • as they grow, can aspire to and have typical expectations of meaningful work in an integrated, supportive environment for fair  compensation;
  • in adulthood, have access to their choice of decent and  appropriate housing which they are able to call their home;
  • experience the unquestioned inclusion in our community and have  access to community activities and facilities;
  • have the opportunity to enjoy real friendships and other naturally supportive relationships that allow mutual respect and  growth;
  • eventually, can retire and enjoy the lifestyle and activities of their choice.
